Coffee can give you a heart attack for hypertension patients: Breaking News

According to the researchers, young adult – between the ages 18 to 45- with mild hypertension who consumes more than four cups of coffee daily have increased predisposition to heart attack, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Drinking coffee also increased the risk of “prediabetes” – a precursor to type 2 diabetes – in some of the participants.

The team also found a link between prediabetes risk, high blood pressure, and daily coffee consumption. They were categorized by the amount of caffeine-containing coffee they would drink per day: non-drinkers (0 cups), moderate (1-3 cups), and heavy drinkers (4 or more).

The findings were first presented at the Congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

The new study was led by Dr. Lucio Mos, a cardiologist at Hospital of San Daniele del Friuli in Udine, Italy.

If you are young and suffering from mild hypertension, it is time to shun your love for coffee.

There was a linear relationship between coffee use and risk of hypertension needing treatment, with a 100 percent increased risk of pre-diabetes in the heavy coffee drinkers.

Statistically speaking, 26.3 percent (26.3%) of the participating subjects were non-drinkers, 62.7 percent (62.7%) of the participating subjects were moderate drinkers, and 10 percent (10%) of the participating subjects were heavy drinkers.

But researchers found that coffee-consumption-related prediabetes was influenced by the CYP1A2 genotype, which shows whether people metabolize caffeine at a fast or slow pace.

During the study’s follow-up period, a total of 60 cardiovascular events were observed, with the majority of these (80%) being heart attacks.

What’s more, this new study was specifically created to investigate whether or not “coffee drinking had an effect on the risk of cardiovascular events, and if the association was mediated by effects on blood pressure and glucose metabolism”. The link between coffee consumption and high blood pressure was significantly higher in those who report at least 4 cups of coffee per day.

The blood pressure patients should be aware that coffee consumption may increase their risk of developing more severe hypertension and diabetes in later life and should keep consumption to a minimum, the authors said.

In parallel, expert cardiologist Dr. David Friedman notes, “Although some limitations exist with this type of study, this association – especially in heavier coffee drinkers – can not be totally discounted”. “There was an association [in the study] with those patients having higher risk of development of heart problems who were also seen to be so-called ‘slow caffeine metabolizers, ‘” he said.
