Shivnarine Chanderpaul retired from international cricket: Breaking News

Chanderpaul has called time on his international career after making his debut nearly twenty two years ago. Chanderpaul notified West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) about his decision through an email.

The West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has announced his retirement from international cricket.

The 41-year-old from Guyana, who made his debut against England in 1994, has called time on a career that saw him amass over 20,000 runs in the three forms of the game.

His final game was against England in Barbados in May last year and he was dropped for the following Test series against Australia, with the West Indies Cricket Board wanting to give younger players a chance. He let the WICB know via email on Friday that he is no longer available for selection.

The WICB Chairman, Dave Cameron, said on the governing body’s official website: “The WICB acknowledges the invaluable contribution Shiv has made to the game globally and we wish him all the best.”

The left-hander, known for his unorthodox and ungainly style, has been a mainstay of the West Indies side for the last 22 years, making 164 Test appearances and he finishes seventh in the all-time Test runs scorers list with 11,867. He scored 30 centuries at an average of 51.37 and also picked up nine wickets.

Chanderpaul, who has had stints in England with Derbyshire, Durham and Warwickshire, also struck 11 One-Day International hundreds in 268 matches.

Who is Shivnarine Chanderpaul?

Shivnarine Chanderpaul (born 16 August 1974) is a former Guyanese cricketer and former captain of the West Indies cricket team. He is the first Indo-Caribbean to play 100 Tests for the West Indies, and captained them in 14 Tests and 16 One Day Internationals. A left-handed batsman, Chanderpaul is well known for his unorthodox batting stance, which has been described as crab-like. He has scored 20,000 runs in international cricket, and in 2008 he was named as one of the five Cricketers of the Year by the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, and as the Player of the Year by the International Cricket Council.

He made his international debut at the age of 19, but did not score a century in international cricket for three years, prompting some criticism. Early in his career, he was plagued by injuries, and was even dubbed a hypochondriac until he had a piece of floating bone removed from his foot in 2000. Since then he has enjoyed consistent form, scoring over 11,000 runs in Test cricket and is currently the 7th highest run scorer of all time in the format.

In January 2016, Chanderpaul announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
